Scarcity

In economics, the idea of scarcity is not the popular notion of “lacking something,” so much as it is an understanding that we are limited – Limited in natural resources, lifespan, mental energy, physical strength, hours in a day, location, etc. Scarcity is the intrinsic reality of humanity, even before the fall of man into sin and its implications. God did not command Adam to have dominion over the earth without also commanding him to be fruitful and multiply: Adam would not have had time for it all!

However, the nature of God does not include scarcity. We often pit God's justice against his mercy, implying that for God to be more just, he must be less merciful at that moment, and vice-versa. There have always been difficulties with grasping that Jesus was both fully man and fully God in the same instance. Yet he is! Or how can we fathom God's complete sovereignty and yet his ability to give us free choice? We cannot assign the human characteristic of scarcity (made scarcer by sin) to God and his ways.

Rejoice in his beauty! Seek to taste his glory until you feel the weight of it! Marvel in each of aspect of his infinity, and realize what it means to believe that God is infinite. When you feel the chastisement of God, do not forget that his kindness is no less expressed. When basking in his gentleness, forget not that he is also wholly just. He is far more than we think he is.
